Developing Resilient People for Resilient Organisations

In his bestselling book ‘Future Shock’ published in 1970, Alvin Toffler predicted a world where people would find it increasingly difficult to cope with the pace and complexity of the changes occurring within everyday life. For many people Toffler’s world has arrived and with a vengeance.
For many organisations change occurs so frequently that the notion of anyone having an accurate, up-to-date job description is simply wishful thinking. Adaptability is the key virtue for both organisations and individuals and those employees who cannot adapt may quickly find themselves in a situation that becomes increasingly stressful.
Research has own that change, in itself, need not be inherently stressful. A 12 year study concluding in the late nineteen eighties on executives working for the Illinois Bell Telephone Company showed that, during a major restructuring within the organisation, whilst many executives and managers developed ill-health problems, around a third did not. This group not only avoided any ill effects from the changes but actually appeared to thrive within the changing environment.
Why? The research suggested that these individuals had developed the abilities necessary to regain a degree of personal control in an environment of uncertainty.
It is abundantly clear that we cannot turn the clock back in terms of slowing down the pace of change. This means that if organisations are to compete effectively they must enable their employees to learn how to be resilient in the face of change.
As part of our continuing series of seminars, ICAS will be hosting this event at which you can learn from those actively involved in managing the change process at work.
